SnowBombing Festival

What is Snowbombing? A ski festival, a comedy show, a music festival? None of these really describes the experience that is Snowbombing. The festival is an intense mix of music and comedy in one of the best of Austria’s ski resorts. The event starts before the festival starts. What that means is there is a road trip to Snowbombing that is considered an official part of the festival; a leisurely ride from the United Kingdom to the ski resort. There are stopping points and an overnight pit stop that gives this trip a fun and casual affair. This is a great alternative to flying direct and fully encouraged by the festival. The Road Trip has become such an event itself that the festival proper doesn’t even start until the Road Trip arrives.

Snowbombing’s website describes it as mythical, musical, and without equal. Looking at the lineup and culture that has grown around this festival they may just be right. This is a place to be free to let go and just have fun whether you choose an all-inclusive ski chalet for your holiday in Austria or more meager accommodations you are guaranteed merriment. The festival has imaginative and humorous traditions about itself to the point that even the locals are getting into it. All around the resort you will find Austrian cultural references and humor. This has given the festival an odd surreal twist that it fully embraces. Expect to see oompah bands, lederhosen, next to anime girls with pink hair, or skiers in cow suits, and ravers of all kinds. Many of the regular attendees come in costume or fancy dress taking on a whole new persona just for the event, these ‘Snowbombers’ gain a sort of cult celebrity and are engaged by the festival to interact with the crowd.

The line-up for Snowbombing has drawn a lot of names, and some major names such as Fat Boy Slim, Madness, Pendulum, Magnetic Man, Sub Focus, Tinie Tempah, Chase & Status, Skream & Benga, Mark Ronson, Dizzee Rascal in the past. This year’s festival has drawn a truly dizzying number of artists, DJs, and lives that will possibly outbill skiing in Austria. Listing them all here would eat up far too much of the word count but here are some of the newest additions including, Above & Beyond, Dub Pistols, Simian Mobile Disco, Tiga, Heidi, Plastician, Catz ‘N Dogz, Maribou State, South London Ordnance, Krankbrothers, Hot Since 82, Union, Rattus Rattus, Clouds, Gingy & Bordello, Tom Staar, Marc Roberts, Wax Wreckaz, North Base, Dave Beer, Adeline, Brinsley Kazak, Josh T, Ben Gomori, BBC; but for a full list of both booked and new artists please visit the website as the list is very impressive.

Accommodations in and around the festival range around £300 to £500, with packages varying on location, size and number of people and the festival itself is only £125 not counting the road trip. Tailoring your package is easy and designed to help fit Bombers of all wallet sizes. This is a truly singular experience if you don’t mind an event that isn’t afraid to poke fun at itself and doesn’t mind cutting loose for a while then you could not ask for a better experience!
